Spring 2008: Apostles' Creed
Russian, 12th Century
Credo . . .Study Notes & Readings.
Christ, in His Divine Innocence, said to the woman of Samaria, "Ye worship ye know not what" - apparently being under the impression that it might be desirable, on the whole, to know what one was worshipping. He thus showed Himself sadly out of touch with the twentieth-century mind, for the cry today is: "Away with the tedious complexities of dogma - let us have the simple spirit of worship; just worship, no matter what!" The only drawback to this demand for a generalized and undirected worship is the practical difficulty of arousing any sort of enthusiasm for the worship of nothing in particular.
--Dorothy Sayers, The Dogma is the Drama.
I believe in God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only begotten Son our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead and buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.
